DALPUMPS was recently contacted by a Northamptonshire school who required the replacement of an ageing pumping station.
Positioned directly beside the school’s main entrance, the project required careful planning to ensure the work could be completed within a limited timeframe and with minimal disruption.
The DALPUMPS team was appointed to remove the existing installation and deliver a replacement solution designed to provide reliable performance for years to come.
The Challenge
During our initial assessment, it became clear that the existing fiberglass pumping station had significantly deteriorated and was no longer operating efficiently.
The base of the chamber had developed a split, meaning that large volumes of groundwater were entering the system. Due to this, unnecessary strain was being put on the pumps which raised concerns about the overall condition and reliability of the system.
Over time, the chamber had also become distorted, restricting access to the pumps and making routine maintenance increasingly difficult. Pump removal for servicing and repairs had become challenging. All this combined meant the school was faced with constant reliability concerns.
Following our assessment, a full replacement was identified as the safest (and most cost effective) long-term solution.
Our Solution
To minimise disruption, all works were scheduled during the school’s summer holiday period.
The project involved the full removal of the existing pumping station and associated mechanical and electrical equipment. Once excavation and site preparation were complete, a new pumping station was installed using precast concrete chamber rings to create a more durable and structurally robust system.
Specialist Equipment and Expertise
Delivering this project required a combination of specialist equipment, technical expertise, and careful site management.
Excavation works were carried out using a 14-tonne excavator. Due to the challenging conditions and high groundwater levels, sheet piling was installed around the excavation to maintain stability throughout the works. A temporary sump pumping system was also used to continuously remove groundwater and keep the area safe and workable.

Specialist lifting equipment was also used to position the concrete chamber sections and install the mechanical components with precision. The final stages of the project were completed by experienced mechanical and electrical engineers who carried out the installation, testing, and commissioning of the pumping equipment and control systems to ensure the new station was fully operational and ready for long term service.
Overcoming Site Challenges
One of the main challenges was the restricted programme window. With the pumping station located directly in front of the school entrance, completing the project during the summer holidays was essential.
The site also presented unusually high groundwater levels, requiring continuous removal of water throughout excavation and installation. This was essential to maintain stability and ensure safe working conditions.
Through detailed planning and effective site management the project was completed safely and on schedule.
Final Outcome
The new pumping station was successfully installed, commissioned, and made fully operational within the allocated holiday period.
The replacement system eliminated the issues caused by groundwater ingress and structural distortion, providing the school with a reliable and efficient wastewater solution.
The new concrete chamber offers improved durability and longevity, while upgraded pumps, pipework, valves, and controls provide dependable day to day performance.

To support long-term operation, a pre planned maintenance programme has been implemented, including six-monthly visits to maintain and optimise the system.
The works ensure the school will have a reliable pumping system for many years to come.
