Treatment Plants
Sewage Treatment Plants
If your property does not have access to a mains sewer system, you will need to dispose of your wastewater appropriately.
A sewage treatment plant is a plant or installation which is designed to treat the waste of larger commercial establishments, or groups of multiple residential houses. The purpose of a treatment plant is to dispose contaminants within wastewater. This is done by adding oxygen into the water through a process of air circulation so that it can be safely discharged into a drainage field or surface water run-off.
Treatment plants can vary in their size depending on the volume of wastewater that is being processed, however they function in a similar way to a septic tank – just on a larger scale!
As with all processing equipment, treatment plants work hard to treat the wastewater going through them and if they are not maintained to a high standard they will not perform as well as they should. Treatment plants will require regular maintenance as sludge can build up on the inside of the tanks. With regular maintenance offered by DALPUMPS their average life span can be significantly extended.
Our experts understand these processes and their need, here at DALPUMPS we can assess your property to determine the best location and type of treatment plant may you need to install these!

It is recommended that septic tanks are emptied and maintained annually to ensure they continue operating correctly. This has also become more important for properties with septic tanks since 2020. At the beginning of 2020, the Government issued new legislation detailing how sewage can be discharged to surface water areas, these are known as the general binding rules, and these must be adhered too.
These rules apply to any operator of a septic tank or small sewage treatment plant. Under the rules if you have a system that discharges directly to surface water, following the new legislation, you may need to replace or upgrade your treatment system.
There are two ways in which you can comply with the new regulations which came into force on January 1st 2020:
- Install a drainage field or soakaway system. The purpose of this is to take the wastewater from your septic tank and disperse it safely into the ground, avoiding the production of any pollution.
- Swap your septic tank for a sewage treatment plant. Sewage treatment plants produce cleaner water. Water produced in a sewage treatment plant is considered clean and safe enough to be dispersed straight into a local river or stream.
A malfunctioning or discharging tank can cause big problems for the exterior space and land around your property as the ground can become contaminated. It is a legal and environmental obligation to make sure that any tank is well maintained and conforms to the new rules. Suppliers like DALPUMPS understand what is required and can provide advice to homeowners regarding their system.
